New Avengers movie to feature James Spader as lead villain
As the hype and fanfare surrounding the upcoming latest instalment of the Marvel movie franchise continues, the latest big news is that James Spader has been cast as Ultron, the lead villain of the film. Often more associated with comedic roles such as the one he played in the American version of The Office, Joss Whedon’s choice of casting has surprised many.
In case you are wondering how big a role Spader will have in the film, it is worth remembering that the next Marvel movie will be called Avengers: Age of Ultron. If you are not familiar with the franchise or the introduction of this new character, Ultron is what's known as a legacy supervillain. This means that he is a character which has been used in the Marvel comic books for a number of years, even dating back to the late 1960s.
One of the most complex and interesting of villains in the Marvel Universe, Ultron is actually a robot with artificial intelligence created by Dr. Hank Pym aka Ant-Man. As often happens when loony scientists create technology with a mind of its own, the whole thing went wrong and Ultron rebelled from its creator’s control. To make things even worse, Pym based the robot’s ‘mind’ on his own, and considering the doctor was a bit of a crackpot in his own right, this resulted in Ultron being a bit of a bad egg to put it lightly.
