Hollywood heading for biggest ever summer box office in US

2013 is soon to become the year of the biggest ever summer box office according to the most recent figures available. So far, this summer has seen American cinemas taking $4.1bn (£2.6bn) from a string of big budget movie releases such as Iron Man 3 and The Wolverine. The previous record was set in 2011, with the total box office returns for that summer standing at $4.4bn (£2.8bn).

Iron Man 3 has been the biggest money maker at the summer box office so far, taking approximately twice as much as the newest Superman movie Man of Steel. Other action movies have also fared well such as Fast & Furious 6, Star Trek Into Darkness and World War Z. Some of the most profitable movies so far have been animated features such as Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University.

However, one thing that makes this most successful summer box office a little surprising is the fact that there have also been some considerable flops. Although still showing in cinemas, Johnny Depp's latest movie The Lone Ranger is expected to do poorly, as did Will Smith and son’s After Earth. Although still profitable, sci-fi extravaganza Pacific Rim also made lower returns than the studio were hoping for.

One movie which is expected to do very well this summer is Elysium starring Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley. Opening weekend returns were in line with studio expectations and this movie could still be one of the summer's biggest successes.
