Happy Birthday Sonic the Hedgehog! One of the Coolest Game Characters Of All Time
Here's a fact only the most diehard Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog fans will know - June 23rd was Sonic’s 22nd birthday! For some of you, that may even make him older than you are, but Sonic is a timeless character who has gone through many reincarnations over the years.
It all started back in 1991 with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis (although the real hardcore gamers among you will know that Sonic actually showed his face for the very first time in a racing game called Rad Mobile, but we'll stick with Nintendo for his official birthday on this one). Since then there have been roughly two dozen different video games featuring Sonic, his best buddy Tails, and arch enemy Dr Robotnik.
Bizarrely, the design of the Sonic character was inspired by the cobalt blue logo of Sega, Michael Jackson's boots, Santa clauses famous red dress sense, and Bill Clinton's popular “Get it done’ attitude of the day. I know it sounds like we’re making this up, but we're really not!
To celebrate the occasion, Sega put on a special birthday party at Tokyo's Joypolis amusement park. The event was a sell-out and was presented by Sonic Lost World producer Takashi Iizuka who entertained the crowd with a presentation of Sonic’s history from the original game to present-day. On twitter meanwhile, Sega posted a picture of Sonic with its very own birthday cake.
Why not show your old school appreciation of Sonic with one of ourSonic the Hedgehog t-shirts. Not only that, but we also have Sonic the Hedgehog wallets, and purses and the girls.
