Will The Incredible Hulk Get a Standalone Movie?
It's been a while since we've a standalone Hulk movie, five years to be exact, but there's a glimmer a hope that Marvel may produce a new film on the not-so-jolly green giant.
Mark Ruffalo, who played as Hulk in The Avengers and The Avengers: Age of Ultron, revealed back in April why Marvel hadn't created a new standalone Hulk movie. According to Ruffalo, Marvel doesn't own the rights to the Hulk movie; it's still Universal's property.
“As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue. That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me,” said Ruffalo during the interview.
Here's the kicker: Forbes an article soon after Ruffalo made this statement, clarifying the rights discrepancy. Yes, it's true that Universal owned the rights to the Hulk, but these rights expired in 2005 when it failed to produce any sequels to the 2003 movie featuring Edward Norton as the Hulk, at which point the rights were transferred back to Marvel.
Assuming this information is true – and it probably is considering it's coming from Forbes – this means Marvel once again holds the rights to produce new Hulk films. However, Universal still has distributing rights of any new Hulk films. Sound confusing? Basically, Marvel has the legal authority to produce new Hulk films but it cannot distribute them to theaters. The distribution rights are being held by Universal.
A similar situation occurred with Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. Paramount Studios had the rights to all of those films, yet Marvel was still able to produce and release them.
Does this mean we'll see a new Hulk film in the upcoming years? The previous reason cited as to why there hasn't been another Hulk movie was licensing. Now that this rumor has been dispelled, there's nothing holding back Universal and Marvel from coming to an agreement. If the express enough desire for a new Hulk movie, there's a very real chance that we'll see it happen. It may not happen this year, or even the next year, but 2017 is certainly a plausible release date for a new Hulk film.
Do you think Universal and Marvel should create a new Hulk movie?
