Animated Spider-Man Movie To Be Released In 2018
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) has announced a new animated Spider-Man movie for 2018. The film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the same people behind the 2014 animated smash hit The Lego Movie. While details of the upcoming Spider-Man film remain scarce at this time, SPE executives provided some insight into the project.
You might be wondering where or not the upcoming animated Spider-Man movie will follow the story of the lice-action movies. There have been a total of five live-action Spider-Man movies produced to date, including Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (note: The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is currently in production). When speaking in front of a crowd at CinemaCon Las Vegas, SPE chairman Tom Rothman said the animated 2018 film will "co-exist" with the current live-action universe. However, a press release by SPE contracted his statement, saying "The film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing."
Whether it follows in the footsteps of the live-action Spider-Man universe, or if it's completely different, it's good to see Spidey going back to his roots. Most of the Spider-Man movies have received mixed reviews, with some people loving them, whereas others hate them. Hopefully, the animated film will take this iconic superhero back in the right direction.
Of course, this isn't the only Spider-Man project in the works. As noted above, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is currently in production. Andrew Garfield played as the webbed superhero in the first two films, but reports indicate that he gave up the role for the third film. It's unknown at this time who will take the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
According to an article published by Variety, Sony and Marvel are also working on a new live-action Spider-Man reboot movie, which is expected to be released in 2017. "Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building," said Bob Igler, Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO.
Furthermore, Spider-Man is expected to show up in Captain America: The Civil War. He obviously won't be the star of the film, but you can expect to see Spider-Man in several of scenes.
