Michael Keaton To Play Ex-Superhero In Birdman
Most of today's generation associate Christian Bale as the Batman. Before Bale's starring role in Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises, there was another actor who donned the mask of the Caped Crusader: Michael Keaton.
Keaton starred in the original 1989 Batman movie, as well as the follow-up sequel Batman Returns in 1992. Critics generally responded favorably to both of these movies, with Rotten Tomatoes giving the original a 71% and the sequel an 81%. While Keaton has starred in several other notable roles since then, including Toy Story 3, Jackie Brown, and The Other Guys, he's yet to take on another superhero role, until now.
Keaton's latest role in the upcoming movie Birdman puts him in the shoes of a struggling actor who was once known for playing a superhero (ironic, huh?). Directed by Academy Award-nominated director Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is best known for Amores perros (2000), 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006) and Biutiful (2010), Birdman is listed as a "comedy," but the trailer suggests it will likely be a mix of dark comedy, drama and suspense.
Here's the synopsis of Birdman courtesy of the film's press release:
"Birdman is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself."
Birdman Official Trailer
Check out the official trailer for Birdman above. It's just under 2 minutes long and shows some pretty cool scenes.
Spoiler alert: it shows asteroids blasting into buildings, strange monster-sized birds, Keaton running through New York's Times Square with a trail of paparazzi, Keaton jumping off the roof of a building, and tons of other crazy stuff. If all of this wasn't enough, there's a certain atmospheric vibe added by the presence of the Gnarls Barkley Crazy remix playing in the background. All in all, this is one heck of a trailer, and I truly hope the actual movie lives up to the expectations set forth by it.
Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Zach Galifianakis and Naomi Watts also have roles in the upcoming movie Birdman.
Birdman is scheduled to be released on October 17, 2014 in the U.S. and January 2, 2015 in the U.K.
